Planting for the Earth: Manulife Investment for a More Sustainable Future

Urbanization often decreases environmental quality through the loss of green open spaces, increased air pollution, and land degradation that affect water quality. Planting trees is one of the most effective strategies to help restore environmental balance and enhance the sustainability of urban environments.

In response to these problems, PT Manulife Aset Manajemen Indonesia (MAMI) has launched its “Investing in the Earth” program with a campaign of planting 1,000 trees at Greenland International Industrial Center (GIIC) in Cikarang, Bekasi. This project marked an important milestone for MAMI, which has been operating in Indonesia for three decades and celebrated the World Environment Day 2026, reflecting the company’s long-term commitment to generating a positive impact for the environment and society.

Four Years of Planting, Building Long-Term Impact

Marking the fourth year of the “Investing in the Earth” program, this year’s planting of 1,000 trees shows the company’s continuous commitment to environmental protection with verifiable and sustainable action. Since its inception in 2022, MAMI has planted over 3,000 trees in various areas across Indonesia as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs as an management investment company.

Trees play an important role in absorbing carbon, improving air quality, preserving soil and water, and providing habitat for wildlife. For MAMI, every tree represents a long-term investment in a more sustainable future, delivering social and environmental advantages that will expand over decades to come – much like a well-managed investment portfolio.
MAMI’s volunteers participated in the tree planting activity.
“Sustainability has long been an integral part of MAMI’s programs. We have implemented CSR initiatives throughout Indonesia, including tree planting, bridge construction, and school renovation projects,” said Ezra Nazula, Director of PT Manulife Aset Manajemen Indonesia.

He shared, through the “Investing in the Earth” program, MAMI hopes to inspire everyone, including its employees, to contribute to protecting the environment, no matter how small the action. The company expects that 1,000 trees planted in the industrial area of GIIC mark the beginning of millions more to be planted across Indonesia.

Collaborating for a More Sustainable Environment

To implement the program, this year MAMI partnered with Trees4Trees to support every stage of the initiative, from selecting suitable planting sites and tree species to providing technical guidance that ensures the trees thrive and maximize their ecological benefits.
Trees4Trees team members and volunteers plant trees together during the tree planting activity.
Pandu Budi Wahono, Director of Trees4Trees, expressed his appreciation for MAMI’s consistent commitment to the program. According to him, planting trees in industrial areas such as GIIC is particularly strategic because it improves environmental quality in the greater Jakarta region while also benefiting surrounding communities.

“Human life is inseparable from trees. We depend on trees to breathe, to access clean water, and to produce food. Planting trees is an investment in the future because the benefits will be enjoyed not only by us but also by future generations. We highly appreciate MAMI’s “Investing in the Earth” program. With careful planning and proper maintenance, this initiative will generate meaningful impacts for nature, ecosystems, and local communities,” Pandu explained.

Planting Trees: Part of Manulife Sustainability Global Commitment

The tree-planting initiative is also part of MAMI’s commitment to the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), supported by the Manulife Sustainability Hub Global. Through a variety of sustainability programs, MAMI strives to ensure that every corporate initiative delivers positive impacts for both people and the environment.

“In addition to planting more than 3,000 trees since 2022, this year we are also donating 90 sets of school furniture made from recycled river plastic waste. Our goal is to ensure that our investments create long-term value not only for future generations but also for environmental sustainability,” said Kandil Dermawan, Head of HR of PT Manulife Aset Manajemen Indonesia and Country Lead of Sustainability Hub Indonesia.
MAMI volunteers walk to the tree planting site at GIIC before the planting activity begins.
Through its partnership with Trees4Trees, MAMI hopes that every tree planted today will continue to grow, providing cleaner air, supporting healthier ecosystems, and leaving a lasting green legacy for future generations. After all, the best investment is not only one that generates returns today, but one that safeguards life for tomorrow.
