With their office based in Jakarta, where traffic and air pollution are everyday challenges, FedEx Indonesia recognizes the importance of a healthy environment to the well-being of employees and surrounding communities. This awareness has inspired the company to enact positive environmental change, helping create a healthier atmosphere for people who live and work in the area. 

 

In April last year, this journey began at the Greenland International Industrial Center (GIIC) in Cikarang, West Java; a major industrial buffer zone, where FedEx Indonesia planted 300 trees to mark the annual Earth Day celebrations. This year, FedEx took these efforts to the next level, planting 800 more trees to further expand their new urban forest within the GIIC industrial area. 

As a global logistics company with a strong emphasis on sustainability, FedEx is working towards a target of becoming fully carbon neutral by 2040, and tree-planting plays a significant role in supporting these these efforts.  

 

FedEx’s partnership with Trees4Trees is helping to deliver this target, while also regreening an area on the outskirts of Jakarta that has been lacking significant tree cover. The tree-planting program utilizes fast-growing trees like white teak (jati putih) and silkwood (albizia), which help to restore degraded soils, along with shade trees like blackboard tree (pulai), which are native to Indonesia. Trees planted last year have already grown to over 2 meters tall, demonstrating how quickly nature can rebound when given a fighting chance. 

 

Ida Ayu Ekarini is the Senior Operations Manager at FedEx Indonesia. She explains the company is guided by an ethos of “Commit to Do Good,” reflecting their commitment to creating positive impacts for the communities and environments where they operate. Through this initiative, FedEx aims to contribute to environmental improvement by supporting carbon sequestration, improving local air quality, providing shade, and helping protect soil and water resources within the industrial area. 

 

“Sustainability is a core principle of our business, and one we hold in high regard,” said Ida, during the latest Trees4Trees planting event. “By planting trees, we are not only helping the environment itself but also helping safeguard the future for generations to come; this also aligns with the nature of our services and the industry in which we operate.”

Following on from last year’s initiative, FedEx once again involved its employees in this year’s tree-planting activity. Around 40 FedEx Indonesia employees came together to plant trees and contribute to a healthier environment. 

 

One of these participants was Fazza, who noted the initiative demonstrates FedEx’s commitment to being more than a logistics company focused on business and service. “It shows that sustainability—and the well-being of both people and nature—remains an important priority for FedEx,” she shared. 

 

Another participant, Habda, shared that, although it was his first time joining a tree-planting activity with his team, he was excited to take part in such a meaningful initiative. “Especially in an industrial area like this,” he said, “pollution can affect the air quality we breathe; I hope these trees can contribute to cleaner air for everyone.”

FedEx is also committed to empowering more women to become environmental defenders. “The role of women in greening the environment is very important,” explained Novia, one of the women participants at the recent event. “Women make up a significant part of the world’s population, so when more women actively contribute to environmental efforts, the impact can be significant and far-reaching,” Novia shared. 

 

She also emphasized the parallels between women and trees: both nurture, sustain, and give life. Just as mothers bring new life into the world, trees provide oxygen and natural resources that allow life on Earth to thrive. By tapping into the historically under-utilized resource of women’s participation in conservation approaches, FedEx is working to upscale their impact and contribute to a more inclusive, equitable environmental movement.

“We believe in the saying that ‘the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the second-best time is today’,” said Ida at the closing of the event, before adding: “we hope that our contribution today will help create a better future for generations to come.”  

 

From industrial landscapes to greener spaces, the FedEx tree-planting initiative is working towards a greener, healthier future. With continued support from Trees4Trees, this program has taken another major step forward.
