Mangrove Marvels
Kampung Laut in Cilacap Regency is home to southern Central Java’s largest mangrove forest. However, in early 1990s large-scale clearing turned much of the area into shrimp and milkfish ponds operated by investors. By 1998, many of these ponds were abandoned, leaving approximately 2,000 hectares of degraded land.
The loss of mangroves not only disrupted local ecosystems that reducing fish stocks and threatening the livelihoods of fishing communities but also diminished the region’s ability to store blue carbon, one of the planet’s most powerful natural climate regulators.
To restore this vital ecosystem, Trees4Trees began collaborating with local communities and supporters in 2024 to replant mangroves, strengthen coastal protection, and revive their vital role as an effective blue carbon sink.
Mangrove Restoration in Action
Since 2024, together we have:
- Planted 175,000 mangroves across 52 hectares of degraded coastal land, comprising seven mangrove species to strengthen biodiversity.
- Established seven silvofishery ponds, integrating mangrove conservation with sustainable fish and mud crab farming.
Yet around 1,000 hectares of degraded mangrove forests still need to be restored. Your support can help bring them back to life.

Growing Impact Together
Near two decades, together with over 150 partners from companies, organizations, and institutions, Trees4Trees has planted over 17 million trees across Indonesia, engaging over 90,000 local farmers and over 1,000 community members annually to support the tree-planting efforts.
This collective effort reflects Trees4Trees’ commitment to embracing local wisdom and practices in improving the environment. It also embodies the spirit of the Indonesian proverb, “Where the earth is stepped, there the sky is upheld,” which emphasizes respecting and adapting to local values and traditions.

Throughout our efforts, our work goes beyond planting trees. We restore landscapes across entire watersheds, from upstream to downstream.
In mountainous areas, tree planting helps protect forests, conserve water sources, reduce erosion, and strengthen ecosystem resilience. Downstream, we restore urban, industrial, and coastal landscapes, helping improve environmental quality while supporting local livelihoods.
By connecting these landscapes, we create lasting environmental benefits that extend far beyond the planting site itself.
