18 Years of Planting Trees: From Upstream to Downstream, Embracing Local Wisdom, Protecting Nature

Over the past 18 years, Trees4Trees has been committed to planting trees aiming to improve the environment while supporting local communities whose lives are connected closely with nature.

Accross Indonesia, many of the landscapes where we work are shaped by local wisdom and traditions that have guided environmental stewardship for generations.

Rooted in Communities and Nature

Guided by those local wisdoms passed down through generations, Trees4Trees believes that protecting nature is closely intertwined with the local community traditions and practices. By honoring and integrating these values into the restoration efforts, we help create a healthier, more sustainable, and livable environment for all living beings.

As local communities are at the forefront of environmental preservation through the knowledge and traditions they have maintained for generations, their role is essential. Therefore, involving and empowering local communities is at the heart of our restoration efforts, as achieving long-term environmental goals depends on their active participation, stewardship, and connection to the land.

"From trees, we find all we need to thrive, so caring for trees through tree planting is a commitment to the future—protecting our planet, nurturing generations to come, and safeguarding the essence of humanity."

-Pandu Budi Wahono

Growing Impact Together

Near two decades, together with over 150 partners from companies, organizations, and institutions, Trees4Trees has planted over 17 million trees across Indonesia, engaging over 90,000 local farmers and over 1,000 community members annually to support the tree-planting efforts.

This collective effort reflects Trees4Trees’ commitment to embracing local wisdom and practices in improving the environment. It also embodies the spirit of the Indonesian proverb, “Where the earth is stepped, there the sky is upheld,” which emphasizes respecting and adapting to local values and traditions.

By involving local communities in tree planting efforts, our goal is to create a healthier environment while providing ecological and economic benefits that support their livelihoods.

Restoring Landscape from Upstream to Downstream

Throughout our efforts, our work goes beyond planting trees. We restore landscapes across entire watersheds, from upstream to downstream.

In mountainous areas, tree planting helps protect forests, conserve water sources, reduce erosion, and strengthen ecosystem resilience. Downstream, we restore urban, industrial, and coastal landscapes, helping improve environmental quality while supporting local livelihoods.

By connecting these landscapes, we create lasting environmental benefits that extend far beyond the planting site itself.

Cultivating the Future Together

This month, as we celebrate 18 years of planting trees, we invite you to join us in growing a greener future through our tree-planting efforts. Every tree planted contributes to healthier forests, cleaner water, richer biodiversity, and stronger communities. Together, we can create lasting impacts for people and nature.

At Trees4Trees, we believe that sustainable environmental restoration grows not only from the roots of trees, but also from the roots of cultural heritage and local wisdom nurtured across generations.

Why planting trees?

Each tree you plant with Trees4Trees does more than absorb carbon dioxide. Trees help restore degraded land, improve water quality, reduce erosion, provide habitat for wildlife, and support biodiversity. For local communities, they can also provide food, medicine, and sustainable sources of income. Healthy tree cover also helps preserve cultural traditions and local wisdom that have connected communities with nature for generations.

When planted in the right place and cared for by local communities, trees become long-term investments in healthier ecosystems, stronger livelihoods, and a more resilient future.
