Gmelina (Gmelina arborea)

Common Name
Gmelina
Description
Gmelina arborea or Kashmir tree is a fast-growing deciduous tree in the family Lamiaceae. Gmelina arborea grows naturally throughout India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and in southern provinces of China. It is found at altitudes from sea level to 1,500 m.
Products
The roots have astringent properties and are used in traditional Indian or Ayurvedic medicine, primarily to treat digestive complaints, fevers, and memory tonic.

Gmelina produces a medium-weight wood with creamy-white to pale yellow-grey heartwood. Its natural resistance to rot and decay is low, making it a non-durable softwood.

The tree regrows well after being cut back to ground level. The wood is suitable for fuelwood, pulpwood and various manufactured wood products, so it is commonly cultivated in forestry systems to be harvested repeatedly over time.
